Amarillo parks battle costly vandalism with swift cleanup efforts

AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — From March 2024 to April this year, the Amarillo Parks and Recreation Department received over 220 calls regarding vandalism in local parks. Crews have been tackling the situation by power washing, using chemicals, or painting over graffiti.

Director of Parks and Recreation Michael Kashuba explained their approach is based on the broken window theory.

“So once you have a broken window on a building, generally you start to see more and more vandalism and graffiti and the same thing applies to parks,” said Kashuba. “If we were just to leave the graffiti and the vandalism, then you would just continue to see it perpetuate itself and the problem growing. So what we try to do is address it as quickly as we can and as effectively as we can.”…
