Aurora Update: Head north to see the Northern Lights tonight

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — Were you hoping to catch the northern lights again tonight in Portland? Well, you may need to head a lot further north of the city to see a dazzling show in the sky.

As a moderate strength geomagnetic storm arrives tonight, the northern lights will likely stay out of reach in Oregon.

The latest forecast from NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center keeps any glow well to the north of our area. Parts of Canada and other northern U.S. states have the best chance to catch a glimpse of the aurora tonight, including some lucky folks in northern Washington.

Geomagnetic storms in recent times have brought amazing views of the lights to our region. One of the best views was during an event in October of 2025.
