The Committee on Academic Freedom and Responsibility, Free Expression and Engagement recommended that Duke not update its policy on academic freedom during Academic Council’s Thursday meeting.
The council also discussed revisions to the Faculty Hearing Committee’s responsibilities and heard a proposal for a new religious studies doctoral degree. In a closed executive session, members discussed honorary degrees for Commencement 2026 and Duke Kunshan University accreditation.

Following a year-long review of Duke’s academic freedom policy, the Committee on Academic Freedom and Responsibility, Free Expression and Engagement told the council it does not recommend changes to the policy.
