New shelter for women and children facing homelessness opens in downtown San Diego

SAN DIEGO — A new shelter for women and children experiencing homelessness opened in downtown San Diego on Thursday.

Women will begin moving next week into the initial 50 beds at Rachel’s Promise Center for Women and Children. This is an increase of 10 beds from the shelter program’s previous site nearby.

The program will expand later this year to serve a total of 210 women and children experiencing homelessness. At full bed capacity, the shelter program would consist of approximately 109 beds for single women and 101 beds for families with children…
