New grocery store opens in Tulsa food desert, aims to improve access to healthy food

TULSA, OK (KTUL) — A new full-service micro grocery store has opened at the Tulsa Dream Center, aiming to address the lack of healthy food access in one of Tulsa’s food deserts. The Grocery Box, which previously operated as a mobile grocery store, will now serve approximately 10,000 residents in the area.

For the past decade, RG Foods has been delivering healthy foods to communities with limited access. Katie Plohocky, Executive Director of RG Foods, said, “This area really is one of the furthest areas away from grocery stores, there’s also not really any bus services right here that bus service has been taken away so we’re seeing a lot of people from the neighborhood walking to the grocery stores and being able to go home.”

Local resident Donna Madden expressed relief at the new store, saying, “I don’t have transportation, that’s for one, and the store across the street, I mean it’s horrible.” Madden described the area as unsafe and noted that children are often watched suspiciously in other stores. “But this, this is beautiful,” she said…
