CEO Killer Faces Death Penalty

A New York federal grand jury has indicted Luigi Mangione on four counts: two counts of stalking, one firearms offense, and murder using a firearm. This final charge carries a potential death penalty.

Mangione is accused of stalking and subsequently killing United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Midtown Manhattan Hilton on December 4, 2024. Thompson was on his way to an investors’ conference at the time of the shooting.

Mangione was apprehended five days later in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and initially charged via federal complaint. His arraignment in Manhattan federal court is scheduled for April 25.

Attorney General Pam Bondi has declared her intention to seek the death penalty. Mangione’s defense team is actively working to prevent this. Earlier this month, Bondi stated her decision was made to “carry out President Trump’s agenda to stop violent crime and Make America Safe Again.”

Defense attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo filed a motion last week arguing that Bondi’s statement, made prior to Mangione’s indictment, was improper and prejudiced the grand jury. Agnifilo requested the judge bar the government from pursuing capital punishment and demanded the release of related documents and notes concerning the Attorney General’s directive.

The defense stated, “The stakes could not be higher. The United States government intends to kill Mr.

Mangione as a political stunt.”

Mangione has pleaded not guilty to separate state charges related to the shooting.
