Reston shelter closes; advocates raise concerns about lack of beds

A temporary overnight shelter (TOS) in Reston that opened last summer — just before Fairfax County cleared out its largest homeless encampment — closed on April 1, raising concerns among advocates for unhoused people.

The shelter inside the North County Human Services Center began operating in late July 2024. Its opening coincided with the county’s efforts to shut down the “The Hill” encampment, a wooded area near the Inova Emergency Room that had sheltered around 50 people earlier last year.

Since opening, the shelter has welcomed guests each night at 5 p.m., offering a place to sleep, food, water, and services provided by local nonprofit Cornerstones, which runs the Embry Rucker shelter in Reston…
