It’s the final countdown for a string of locally-owned neighborhood markets in Austin, as its owner retires and the business locations face acquirement from new leadership.
Thom’s Market opened off Barton Springs Road in South Austin back in 2007, expanding to four stores at its peak. The neighborhood grocer sold ready made meals, produce, convenience items, pet necessities, beer and wine, gifts and other trinkets, all nestled inside stores marked by the brand’s cowgirl mascot.
Currently, there are three markets off Barton Springs Road, Burnet Road and Riverside Drive, all of which will be acquired come next week. Bill Thom, owner of Thom’s Market, announced on the business’ website its planned closure on Sunday, April 19.
“This decision was not an easy one,” Thom said in a statement . “Growing Thom’s Market has been one of the most rewarding adventures of my life, and I am beyond grateful for the friendships and memories that have made this journey so special. What started as a simple neighborhood market blossomed into a beloved local landmark, thanks to our loyal customers and dedicated staff. We couldn’t have done it without Austin’s love and support.”
In a Facebook post earlier this week, Thom confirmed Austin’s Select Market entered into an agreement to acquire all three market locations. Those shops are expected to reopen under its own brand on April 22, the post added…
