Plane Passengers Race Into Shelters As Tornado Hits Airfield

Passengers had to take cover in tornado shelters at an airport after landing in Nebraska as severe weather and tornadoes were reported across the state.

The National Weather Service’s (NWS) Storm Prediction Center (SPC) received 10 tornado reports in Nebraska, and six in Iowa on Thursday. There were also a significant number of wind and hail reports received from both states.

Why It Matters

The airport incident came as a powerful weather system moved across the central United States , bringing an elevated threat of severe storms to eastern Nebraska and western Iowa. The SPC issued an Enhanced Risk alert for the region, warning of large hail , damaging winds and the possibility of isolated tornadoes.

With hail potentially as large as baseballs and winds up to 60 mph, the storms brought significant destruction to homes, infrastructure, and disrupted travel.
