PGCPS recommendation to close charter school leaves parents with mixed feelings

FORT WASHINGTON, Md. ( DC News Now ) — A Prince George’s County charter school may close next year due to budget cuts. Although the decision is not final yet, many parents have mixed feelings about the recommendation.

A letter sent to families at Excel Academy Public Charter School in Fort Washington said that PGCPS has provided a notice of “recommendation of non-renewal” due to financial viability. They expect the 2025-2026 school year to be the last school year the school will be open.

This comes as the school system is facing a more than $30 million deficit due to state and federal budget cuts.
