Plano Police Honor K9 Officer Gary With Overdue Retirement Ceremony

On April 9, 2025, the Plano Police Department gathered to honor one of its most tenacious team members during a long-overdue retirement ceremony with a special plaque given by Plano Police Chief Ed Drain.

K-9 Officer Gary, a Belgian malinois and German shepherd mix, officially ended his service on July 31, 2024, after five years of dedicated duty alongside his handler, Sergeant C. Poligala.

Gary’s Successful Career

Gary joined the Plano force in April 2019 after completing his training at Pacesetter K9 in Liberty Hill. At just 15 months old, he began a storied career as a dual-purpose narcotics detection and criminal apprehension canine. Over more than 500 deployments, Gary made 111 successful apprehensions and played a crucial role in dozens of investigations.

“As a valued member of the department, his actions and accomplishments are a testament to his unwavering dedication, exceptional skill and vital role in enhancing public safety within the community,” the department said in a statement .

Despite his serious skills, Gary was known for a personality that was, well, particular. According to police, while extremely loyal to his handler, he had a “healthy dislike” of almost everyone else.

What’s Next For Gary

Now officially retired, Gary has traded crime scenes for poolside naps and patrols for playful sprints across the family ranch. According to the department, his current priorities include relaxing, occasional squirrel chases and enjoying the quiet life.
