NYC Mom Trades City Stress for Portuguese Tranquility
A New York City native, Lisa White, never imagined living anywhere but the bustling metropolis. However, growing safety concerns for her two sons in public schools, coupled with the ever-increasing cost of living, prompted a drastic change. White began to explore the possibility of relocating to another country.
Her research prioritized safety, quality of life, and affordability. Portugal, consistently ranked as one of the safest countries globally, quickly emerged as a top contender.
After two exploratory trips – a two-week stay in Porto and a month-long stay in the Algarve region – White and her sons were convinced. They embraced the prospect of a slower pace of life.
The transition wasn’t easy. The visa process proved challenging, and the family spent six months preparing for the move, selling belongings, and hiring legal and real estate assistance. Despite moments of doubt, they boarded a plane in March, their future packed into six suitcases.
Just a month into their new life, the difference is palpable. Trading city sirens for the soothing sounds of ocean waves, the family has grown closer.
Daily beach walks, home-cooked meals, and weekend trips to neighboring countries have replaced the hurried pace of New York life. White’s sons have adapted well, making new friends and enjoying the outdoors.
Financially, the move has also been beneficial. White’s expenses have been cut in half, partly due to lower living costs but also a shift in her spending habits. The constant pressure to consume, prevalent in her former life, has dissipated.
The family has been warmly welcomed by the Portuguese community. While English is widely spoken in their area, they are actively learning Portuguese, a gesture appreciated by locals. They shop at local businesses, forging friendships with shopkeepers who now greet them by name.
White and her sons are embracing their new life, enjoying the tranquility and close-knit community. While they maintain contact with friends and family back in the US, they have no plans to return stateside except for visits. For now, their future is firmly planted on Portuguese soil.
