Major Interstate 80 closure starts Monday morning

DES MOINES, Iowa — Starting April 21, the southbound entrance ramp at the Interstate 80 Hickman interchange and the southbound exit ramp at University will close for 120 days.

Frank Leone, an engineer with the Iowa Department of Transportation, said the closure is part of an interstate expansion project.

“We will be widening out the outside lanes, northbound and southbound, adding about anywhere from 36 to 24 feet of pavement out there to increase capacity on the freeway. So that would be the ultimate configuration out there during the construction, as everybody knows, we started last fall working in the middle of the freeway and now we have moved to the outside and we’re going to have some pretty substantial closures coming up,” Leone said.
