MADISON COUNTY, Iowa — The Madison County Attorney’s Office announced on Friday that it has filed a Petition for Removal From Office and Petition for Injunction against County Treasurer Amanda DeVos.
According to the attorney’s office, the petitions are in response to the accusations made against DeVos of engaging “in willful misconduct, maladministration and failure to perform the duties of office.” DeVos is facing several criminal charges after a Madison County Sheriff’s Office investigation discovered that DeVos allegedly falsified her vehicle registration and property tax documents to say that she had paid them when she reportedly hadn’t. DeVos is also accused of mishandling county funds, including erroneously depositing $250,000 to the City of Winterset.
Since her arrest, DeVos has continued to receive her salary and benefits despite having been relieved of her duties by the Madison County Board of Supervisors and an interim treasurer was appointed. According to court documents, DeVos is receiving a salary of nearly $80,000.

The attorney’s office is now asking for DeVos to be formally removed from office and temporarily barred from receiving pay and benefits while the petition makes its way through the courts and a ruling is made. The full petition can be read below:

In a press release, Madison County Attorney Stephen J. Swanson released a statement about the filings, which reads in part:
The actions of Ms. DeVos have eroded public trust in the Madison County Treasurer’s office, disrupted county financial operations, and prompted investigations by the State Attorney General and the State Auditor’s offices.
