OKC council needs to provide more funding for animal shelter
We know OKC Animal Welfare has faced very high increases in drops-offs of lost, abandoned and unwanted pets in recent years. We believe this sad trend is related to problems people are having with inflation and increased housing costs as affordable housing is replaced with high-dollar properties.
The responsible answer is NOT to leave abandoned/lost/unwanted pets where they are found, as OKC Animal Welfare recommends in an official statement. Accepting these pets is the responsibility of animal control in every city. They can’t just say, “We’re not doing that anymore.” If they need more tax dollars, the Oklahoma City Council should please reevaluate the budget and increase funding for this essential service.
OKC Animal Welfare’s statement claims “research and best practices” from “animal welfare organizations” show that leaving defenseless pets where they are “gives them the best chance of reuniting with their families.” Common sense and 40 years in pet rescue tell us that is not true…
