Destin’s Crab Island: A Floating Fiesta

Crab Island, a popular Destin, Florida destination, isn’t an island at all, but a submerged sandbar teeming with boats, bachelorette parties, families, locals, and tourists. A boat is essential to reach this lively spot, and recently, a group of friends and I opted for a tiki boat tour.

For around $70 per person, we booked a three-hour shared excursion with Tailfins Tiki Tours. Arriving at the bustling Destin Harbor Boardwalk, we found a mix of restaurants and boat rental companies. Our tiki boat, complete with ornate stools, built-in cup holders, and even a small bathroom, offered fantastic water views for all 14 passengers.

The 20-minute cruise to Crab Island, soundtracked by the captain’s music selection, provided scenic views of Destin. We brought our own drinks (no glass allowed!), and enjoyed the emerald waters while the crew set up floating tables and a lily pad.

Inflatable floats were available for rent, or the crew happily inflated those we brought. Forgot something?

No problem! Floating vendors offered everything from sunscreen to BBQ and even alcoholic jelly shots.

Crab Island was a sight to behold, with hundreds of watercraft – pontoons, kayaks, jet skis, and more – anchored around the sandbar. Giant inflatable unicorns and flamingos added to the festive atmosphere. After three hours of soaking up the sun, swimming, and enjoying the vibrant scene, we returned to the harbor.

The $70 price tag felt reasonable for the experience, and we happily tipped the hardworking crew. If you’re seeking a fun, affordable activity in Florida, a tiki boat trip to Crab Island is definitely worth considering.
