COLUMBIA, S.C. — Firefighters battled a large fire at an apartment complex off Broad River Road in Columbia on Saturday.
The fire was reported at Briargate Condominiums, near Broad River Road and I-20 in the St. Andrews community. When they arrived, Chief Aubrey Jenkins said firefighters found heavy flames and smoke erupting from the top of one of the buildings. From there, crews called a second alarm to allow for additional resources.
A traffic camera along I-20 showed flames rising high above one of the apartment buildings not long after the fire was called in around 2:30 p.m. Jenkins said some people were jumping from their balconies to escape the fire, and three people were taken to the hospital with injuries.
