Sumter man accused in Wells Fargo robbery after getaway with accidental accomplice

SUMTER, S.C. — A Sumter man is in custody for bank robbery, and another man has been released after investigators found he was an unwitting accomplice to the crime.

The Sumter Police Department said the robbery happened around 11:15 a.m. Saturday at a Wells Fargo bank on Broad Street. Police said the suspect, later identified as 53-year-old Marion Kelly III, attempted to make a transaction and then gave the bank teller a note demanding money and threatening to hurt them — though he apparently didn’t present a weapon.

Police said he left with an unspecified amount of money, got into a car, and left the scene. The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office helped police find the driver and the vehicle involved in the getaway. The driver was also found at a motel on Broad Street…
