Tesla driver killed after crashing into tree in Walnut Creek

A man died after crashing his Tesla into a tree on a busy Walnut Creek thoroughfare early Saturday, according to the city’s police department.

The driver, who has not been identified, was heading east down Ygnacio Valley Road and struck a tree just west of North Main Street at 2:40 a.m., police said. Nobody else was in the car.

Officers do not yet know whether the Tesla was in self-driving mode at the time of the impact, Walnut Creek Police Lt. Holley Connors told the Chronicle.
