From the archives: A wealthy New Hanover community mulls incorporation to block annexation

The 1990s brought major growth to Wilmington. By the end of the decade, the city’s population grew by more than 30 percent.

No doubt some of it happened thanks to annexation efforts, but not without some opposition. One neighborhood’s pushback nearly turned into a new city for New Hanover County.

According to an article in the April 20, 1994, Wilmington Morning Star, Landfall residents came to a Wilmington City Council meeting to “oppose even the possibility of annexation.”…
