Jury selection in capital murder retrial of Dallas man charged in death of Waco, Texas landlord scheduled for Monday

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – The capital murder retrial of a Dallas man charged in a conspiracy to rob and kill his co-defendant’s Waco landlord in December 2022 is scheduled to begin Monday morning in Waco’s 19th State District Court.

Brandon Stephens, 21, is the co-defendant of James Keylan Willis, also of Dallas, who was sentenced to an automatic life prison term with no parole after his capital murder conviction last week in the death of 59-year-old Stanley Wilcox.

Stephens is charged with plotting with Willis to rob Wilcox of his bank accounts, two vehicles and household items a week after Wilcox sent Willis and his girlfriend an eviction notice. The pair had been renting a room from Wilcox at his home on Garrett Avenue for about four months and Willis made no secret of his disdain for Wilcox.

Authorities found Wilcox’s body wrapped in a blanket and dumped in a creek bed near the Baylor University campus. He had been shot in the head three times, once in the left thigh and once in the left hip…
