KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — A proposed new medical school in rural Oregon could help address the state’s ongoing physician shortage, especially in underserved communities far from urban centers.
Currently, Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland is the state’s only public medical school. In 2025, just 126 students graduated with medical degrees — far fewer doctors than needed to meet demand, particularly for primary care doctors.
