Pope Francis Makes Easter Appearance Despite Recent Health Scare
Rome— To the delight of thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square, a convalescing Pope Francis appeared on the balcony of St.
Peter’s Basilica for Easter Sunday services. The 86-year-old pontiff, looking over a vibrant square filled with flowers, waved and offered his Easter blessings from his wheelchair.
The crowd erupted in cheers at his appearance.
The Vatican had been cautious leading up to Easter, stating the Pope’s attendance depended on his health. This fueled concerns about his fragility and heightened anticipation among the faithful.
Prior to the service, Pope Francis held a brief meeting with Vice President JD Vance, exchanging Easter greetings.
Cardinal Angelo Comastri, retired archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica, led the Mass and delivered the homily prepared by Pope Francis.
However, the Pope himself emerged after the Mass to enthusiastic applause, followed by a performance from a military band. The Urbi et Orbi papal address was then delivered by Master of Ceremonies, Diego Ravelli.
In his address, Pope Francis appealed for global peace, highlighting the conflict in Gaza and calling for a ceasefire and the release of hostages. He also offered prayers for various communities facing conflict and suffering, including those in Ukraine, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Sudan, South Sudan, Myanmar, the Sahel and Horn of Africa regions, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. His message emphasized hope, trust, and unity, reminding everyone that we are all children of God.
Following the service, the Pope greeted the crowds in St. Peter’s Square from his popemobile, blessing children along the way.
This Easter week, a pivotal time in the Catholic calendar, comes after a challenging period for Pope Francis. He recently spent over five weeks hospitalized for pneumonia, facing two life-threatening moments. Doctors have advised rest and limited exposure to crowds during his ongoing convalescence.
Despite his health challenges, Pope Francis has continued his duties, although he missed the Catholic Church’s jubilee celebration. While his declining health has prompted speculation about a potential retirement, the Vatican has given no indication of such plans.
