DHL Halts Delivery of High-Value Packages to US Consumers
International shipping giant DHL has announced a temporary suspension of deliveries to US consumers for packages valued at over $800. This change, effective April 21st, comes as a direct result of increased customs processing times stemming from recent US tariff policy adjustments.
The new regulations, which lowered the minimum value for formal customs processing from $2,500 to $800, have created a significant backlog. DHL stated that while they are working around the clock to process these clearances, the surge in volume necessitates the temporary halt.
The suspension applies to shipments from any origin exceeding the $800 threshold and will remain in effect until further notice. Business-to-business shipments and deliveries to consumers valued under $800 will continue as usual. However, DHL cautions that even these packages may experience delays due to the ongoing customs congestion.
This announcement follows a similar move by HongKong Post earlier this month, suspending sea mail services for goods destined for the US. Both organizations cite recent US tariff policies as the primary reason for the service disruptions. These policies, including the removal of a “de minimis” provision, are expected to significantly impact Chinese retailers popular with American consumers, potentially leading to price increases.
These shipping disruptions are the latest development in ongoing trade tensions between the US and China, marked by escalating tariffs on both sides.
