What to know before 17-year cicadas emerge throughout the state

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Much like that of a Star Wars title, “The Return of the 17-year Cicadas” will soon be looming in the state of Tennessee.

According to an article written by the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture, within the next couple of weeks, a brood of periodical cicadas will soon be emerging from the ground. These cicadas that last emerged in 2008 will be looking for mates before laying eggs for the next 17-year emergence.

“The 17-year periodical cicadas of Brood XIV will begin to emerge when the soil temperature at eight inches deep reaches 64 degrees, which is estimated to be in late April to early May,” the website said…
