Portlanders say volunteering is important. Why are so few of them actually doing it?

During the COVID pandemic, Americans turned inward as a way to stay safe and healthy. But, in the five years since, that isolation, combined with an increased dependence on social media and the ability to get almost anything delivered right to your door, has atrophied into extreme loneliness.

“In 2023, the Surgeon General said the United States is suffering from an epidemic of loneliness,” said Beach Pace, the CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest.

“Young people age 15 to 24 have 70% less social interaction with their friends as compared to 20 years ago. They’re experiencing higher rates of loneliness than any other generation.”…
