Pentagon Makeover Sparks Controversy for Defense Secretary

Additional Coverage:

Embattled Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is facing renewed criticism and online ridicule after reports emerged of a Pentagon makeup studio installed at his request. The studio, which reportedly cost several thousand dollars, has been defended by the Pentagon as a necessary “green room” for television appearances by Hegseth and other leaders.

The news comes on the heels of several controversies surrounding the former Fox News host, including a recent security lapse involving a journalist and a Signal group chat, as well as Hegseth’s remarks about ensuring troops are “fit – not fat” and “sharp – not shabby.”

While the Pentagon maintains that renovations to the briefing room are routine, particularly with administration changes, the timing and nature of the upgrades have raised eyebrows. The new facility, complete with a director’s chair, mirror, and makeup light, has been dubbed a “makeup studio” by critics, leading to the derisive nickname “Pentagon Princess” for Hegseth on social media. Even Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer joined the fray, mockingly suggesting Hegseth’s preferred Pentagon makeup products were “concealer and coverup.”

The Pentagon insists the renovations were “deliberately conservative,” using existing inventory and internally constructed elements. A spokesperson emphasized the need to provide the Secretary and other VIPs with appropriate space and support for on-camera engagements.

The room is reportedly intended for Hegseth’s media appearances, including a scheduled interview on Fox News this week, though it has not yet been used for press briefings. The Pentagon green room also underwent renovations earlier this year.
