There are tunnels under the city of Grand Rapids. An old newspaper once provided a map of the ‘Secret” tunnel system under the downtown.
Underground Tunnels in Michigan
I was born in Detroit and grew up about 45 minutes from the city. As a kid, I always heard stories about the underground salt mines in Detroit. I never explored them, but have heard stories of people going into those underground tunnels.

In grade school, we were learning about the history of Michigan. We learned about the iron and copper mines in the Upper Peninsula. Iron ore was discovered in 1844, and copper was mined by Native Americans as early as 3000 B.C., but settlers began mining in the mid-1800s. There are tunnels all over the Upper Peninsula because of it.
Secret tunnels are in Kalamazoo, Albion, Detroit, the Upper Peninsula, and Grand Rapids.
