Last year, a citywide election exposed a divide when San Franciscans were asked to vote on Proposition K , a measure to transform the 2-mile stretch of the Upper Great Highway thoroughfare into a completely car-free park . When Prop. K passed, the backlash from neighboring residents was immediate.
Now, some have changed their minds.
The new oceanside park, named Sunset Dunes, officially opened in early April to mixed reactions. While the majority of San Franciscans were in favor of shutting down the highway to pave the way for a park, west side voters — including those living in the Outer Sunset and Outer Richmond — overwhelmingly rejected it.
