Trends In Inmate Aging: A Look At New York’s Prisons

Some prisons in New York have quite a few senior citizens incarcerated in them. While many of us may not think of grey-haired grandparent types as criminals, there’s a healthy number of prisoners aged 55 and older in New York State prisons. Either they got locked up at a young age but are serving long or life sentences, or they got into a life of crime at a ripe old age.

Here Is How Many Prisoners Died In New York State Prisons

A reality of an aging prison population is the likelihood that incarcerated individuals will die behind bars. The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision released a report of how many incarcerated individuals have died in its facilities for the year.

Over the past ten years, there have been a total of 1,353 inmate deaths at state-run facilities. These deaths include all facilities – maximum, medium, and minimum security prisons, as well as Regional Medical Units.
