The signs say “no new taxes.” Here’s what’s really on the ballot

NEW ORLEANS — Bright red signs have appeared around New Orleans urging voters to reject a proposed tax renewal during the upcoming May 3 elections. The signs read “no new taxes” — the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, whose operating budget is funded in large part by the tax, points out the tax is not new.

Friday morning, Sheriff Susan Hutson held a press conference to address the signs.

“It is a renewal,” she said. “All you’ve got to do is read the ballot, it’ll tell you that.”…
