Grandpa’s Guitar Worth More Than He Thought

Additional Coverage:

A Michigan rocker’s vintage guitar just got a whole lot more valuable, and his grandkids might be out of luck. A recent episode of “Antiques Roadshow” featured a 1966 Fender Jaguar, brought in by its original owner, a former member of the Michigan Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame band, Riot Squad. The owner, who bought the guitar simply because it was the only color in stock, was stunned to learn its current worth.

While the guitar itself is a desirable model, it was the unique “surf green” custom color that really caught appraiser Dave Hinson’s eye. Hinson pointed out the rarity of this particular shade, especially among Fender guitars, noting that blues and greens are highly sought after by collectors. The original owner even had the original color chart and owner’s manual, further adding to the guitar’s value.

Originally purchased in 1967 for $383 (a hefty sum at the time), the guitar’s value has skyrocketed over the years. Hinson estimated its current retail value at a staggering $12,000, almost 30 times the original price.

The owner, clearly surprised, quipped that his grandkids, whom he previously thought would inherit the instrument, might now be out of the running. It seems this rare gem will stay with its rock and roll owner.
