Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announces state lawsuit against TikTok, ByteDance

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced Tuesday that the state has filed a lawsuit against TikTok and its parent company ByteDance for what he calls “deceptive claims about youth safety.”

In a statement Tuesday, Marshall accused the social media company of exploiting children and addicting them to harmful content, fueling a mental health crisis among Alabama’s youth.

The lawsuit alleges that TikTok’s algorithm is designed to keep minors endlessly scrolling and expose them to content that promotes depression, eating disorders, self harm and drug use, as well as dangerous viral challenges…
