What to do if your key fob battery died

TAMPA, Fla. (BLOOM) — You’re rushing to work, the gym, or the grocery store when it happens — you press your key fob, and nothing. No clicks, no unlock, no start. If your car key fob battery has died and you’re locked out, don’t panic. With modern vehicles increasingly dependent on electronic keys, this frustrating situation is more common than ever. Here’s what to do if your key fob battery dies and you can’t get into or start your car.

1. Check for a Manual Key Hidden in the Fob

Most modern key fobs, even for push-to-start vehicles, include a hidden mechanical key. Look for a small release switch or button on your key fob. Slide or press it to pull out the emergency key.

Once you have it, check your car door handle. Many vehicles, including models by Toyota, Ford, BMW, and Nissan, have a concealed keyhole. Look for a small cap on the door handle, usually on the driver’s side. You can gently pop off the cap with the mechanical key to access the lock.

2. Use the Mechanical Key to Unlock the Door

Once you reveal the keyhole, insert your mechanical key and turn it to unlock the door manually. This old-school method still works even if the electronic system fails. However, be gentle, modern lock cylinders are less frequently used and may be stiff.

3. Try to Start the Car with a Dead Key Fob

If you’re inside the vehicle but your car won’t start because the key fob battery is dead, don’t assume you’re stuck. Most push-to-start systems have a backup method to detect a dead fob.

Look in your vehicle manual to find the backup start procedure. Often, holding the dead key fob against the start button while pressing the brake can still allow the car to recognize it and start. Some vehicles have a designated slot or area on the steering column or center console for just this situation.

4. Replace the Key Fob Battery ASAP

Key fob batteries typically use flat, round lithium cells, most commonly CR2032 or CR2025, which are inexpensive and widely available at convenience stores, pharmacies, and big box retailers. You can also order a replacement battery online if you’re not in a rush…
