Firefighters tackle scrap fire at OmniSource

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — A scrap fire at OmniSource has burned for several hours and closed down a portion of a nearby road Wednesday, Fort Wayne dispatchers confirmed.

The Fort Wayne Fire Department issued a Public Safety Alert just before 9 p.m. Wednesday warning people about the smoke coming from the fire and urging nearby residents to remain indoors and keep windows closed. The fire has been burning since approximately 6:20 p.m.

OmniSource has multiple properties on Fort Wayne’s east end: one at the corner of State Road 930 and Meyer Road, while the other is located on Maumee Avenue behind a slew of businesses along East Washington Boulevard. According to dispatch, the fire is at OmniSource’s Maumee Avenue location.

No buildings are on fire, but a scrap fire on the property has caused a large plume of smoke, resulting is a road closure along Maumee Avenue between Kitch Street and East Washington Boulevard…
