Trooper’s traffic stop in DeKalb County construction zone leads to drug and firearm arrest

DEKALB CO. – A routine patrol by an Indiana State Police Trooper in a designated construction zone in DeKalb County on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, resulted in the arrest of a Michigan man on drug and weapons charges.

The Trooper initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle that was observed operating without headlights or taillights. During the subsequent investigation, the Trooper discovered a substance believed to be illegal. Preliminary field testing indicated the substance was suspected cocaine. Further search of the vehicle yielded several items of drug paraphernalia and a handgun.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Steven Yntema, 65, of Saginaw, Michigan, was arrested and is facing the following charges: possession of cocaine with enhancing circumstances, a Level 5 felony, possession of drug paraphernalia, and OWI controlled substance, both Class C misdemeanors.
