Family Moves Cross-Country for Grandparents

Family Bonds Strengthened by Cross-Country Move

Four years ago, our family embarked on a two-day trek across the country, trading the South for the Midwest. Driven by a desire for more family support with our two young children, we returned to my hometown. The long drive, packed U-Haul, and endless bathroom breaks were a small price to pay for the payoff: simply saying “See you tomorrow” instead of goodbye at the end of the journey.

Both my spouse and I grew up surrounded by extended family, and we wanted the same experience for our children. Living near my parents has provided invaluable support.

Initially, my mom provided daycare until the kids started school. Now, she works at their elementary school and drives them home each day.

This gives me a direct line to them, easing any worries. Sleepovers, movie outings, and impromptu hangouts are regular occurrences, enriching their lives and occasionally granting me some free time.

My brother, who lives with my parents, has also become a significant figure in my children’s lives. Their playful interactions have drawn him out of his shell and boosted his confidence.

My parents are constantly involved, attending games, taking the kids to the park, and providing snacks (though bedtime sugar rushes have required some negotiation!). Having them nearby for last-minute childcare needs has made a world of difference compared to our earlier days of parenting solo.

The move has also brought my children closer to their cousins. With a large extended family in town, they have a built-in network of playmates. Seeing them grow up together, playing on the same sports teams, and enjoying big family gatherings warms my heart and echoes my own childhood experiences.

While we are now further away from my incredibly supportive in-laws, we visit regularly and meet in the middle for trips. I’m holding out hope that they’ll join us after retirement!

This move was a major adjustment, especially for my husband, who changed careers to make it happen. But it has created a stable, happy environment for our kids, giving them the priceless gift of time with grandparents.
