Harry Forgives Royals, But Do They Forgive Him?

Additional Coverage:

Prince Harry’s recent interview with BBC News has sparked controversy, particularly his claim to have forgiven the Royal Family for past grievances. While the Duke of Sussex acknowledged causing upset within the family, likely due to his tell-all memoir Spare, he remained vague about the offenses committed against him and his wife. This ambiguity prompted questioning from royal expert Pauline Maclaran, Professor of Marketing and Consumer Research at Royal Holloway, University of London, who pointedly asked, “Forgiven them for what?”

Professor Maclaran, author of Royal Fever, believes the family may be irritated by Harry’s declaration of forgiveness, as it implies wrongdoing on their part without specifying the nature of those actions. While the Duke has previously spoken out about the mistreatment of his wife by both the media and family members, he refrained from elaborating during this interview.

He did, however, allude to the recent Royal Court trial regarding his UK security detail, stating that his “worst fears were confirmed,” though he provided no further details. The interview also touched upon reconciliation with King Charles, suggesting a complex and evolving relationship between father and son.

Professor Maclaran speculates that Harry’s pronouncements may be an impulsive reaction to the loss of his security battle, suggesting a possible link between the legal setback and his public statements.
