May’s first weekend is off to an unsettled start as strong-to-severe storms roll through the WCCB Charlotte viewing area. Off-and-on heavy thunderstorms packing gusty winds, small hail, frequent lightning, and localized torrential rain will last through much of the evening and overnight hours before slowly clearing to the northeast. A sluggish cold front will steadily clear the moisture eastward Sunday morning, allowing mostly sunny skies to return by the mid-afternoon across the Piedmont and Foothills as highs top out in the mid-to-upper 70s. The High Country won’t be so fortunate as wrap-around northwesterly flow will keep mostly cloudy skies and scattered showers in the forecast through the remainder of the weekend.
Outside of a stray shower in the High Country, the first two days of the workweek look fantastic. The Piedmont and Foothills will see mostly sunny skies and highs going steady in the mid-to-upper 70s on both Monday and Tuesday before more rain chances arrive by midweek. Medium-range models show a slow-moving rainmaking system throwing more showers and storms into the Carolinas beginning Wednesday, lingering well into next weekend as it stalls over the Southeast.
