Racers face off against the rain and each other during Soap Box Derby | PHOTOS

HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CHRISTIAN COUNTY NOW) – The rain did not slow down dozens of young racers who have been working hard assembling their cars for the 19th Annual Soap Box Derby. With participants as young as seven years old, this year’s racers persisted through unsavory weather, with several smiling faces walking away with trophies.

With cars flying downhill at Ruff Park all day on May 3, family members and people from the community arrived to cheer on racers in different stock divisions. Super Kids races also took place throughout the day, which feature individuals with special needs riding alongside another driver to race to the finish line.

The concept of creating a car and participating in the race is a fun way the Bluegrass Youth Racing Foundation introduces kids to STEM. With less than a second separating some racers from each other, the double elimination races resulted in some incredible triumphs after weeks of practice.

First place winners from each stock division will also have the chance to participate in the International Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio. The Hopkinsville Soap Box Derby shared the winners for the day in the various divisions…
