GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WZTV) — A Tennessee Army National Guard flight crew rescued an injured hiker from a remote area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on Thursday afternoon.
Just after 2:50 p.m., a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter from the 1-230th Assault Helicopter Battalion took off from Joint Base McGhee-Tyson to respond to a medical emergency near Derick Knob Shelter, southwest of Gatlinburg.
The crew located the hiker, conducted a medical assessment and administered first aid before hoisting the patient into the aircraft. The hiker was then flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville for further treatment…
