Weather Forecast: Days of rain expected for WNY

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Sunday won’t bring much relief either; the day will start off overcast and cool, with another round of scattered showers expected by late afternoon and evening. Temperatures again will stay on the cooler side, only reaching the low to mid 50s for highs.

8-Day Forecast

The culprit behind this extended stretch of wet weather is a low-pressure system that’s forecasted to detach from the jet stream late Sunday night. Once it becomes what’s known as a “cutoff low,” it will lose its forward momentum and park itself over the Ohio River Valley. As it lingers, it will tap into a steady stream of moisture from the south, setting the stage for a prolonged period of rain. This system will also introduce enough instability into the atmosphere to spark a few thunderstorms by Monday and Tuesday.

By midweek, a strong cold front sweeping in from the northwest will finally push the stagnant low out of the region. This frontal passage will help clear out the clouds and rain but will also usher in a cooler air mass just in time for the start of the Lilac Festival. Expect bright skies and brisk temperatures on Thursday and Friday, with sunshine continuing into Saturday.

It seems as though we could continue to see dry weather for next weekend as well, which is a good outlook for Mother’s day. We will continue to update our forecast accordingly as more data becomes more available…
