SPOKANE, Wash. – Jerry Escamilla is preparing for Bloomsday with a personal mission. Diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in December 2021, a disease that affects nerve fibers controlling muscles, Jerry was once unable to move his limbs, eyes, or even breathe independently.
It took years for Jerry to regain his movement. Last year, he completed Bloomsday in three hours using walking sticks. This year, he plans to cross the finish line on his own two legs.
Jerry’s mother, Angie Escamilla, recalled the difficult time when her son was diagnosed. “My other son had came to me and was like, thinking he was having an asthma attack,” she said. “The next thing I seen is when they are loading my son onto the ambulance to take him out to the airport. I watched my kid fly away on an airplane, not sure if I would ever see him again.”…
