Diana’s Daring Dress Turns Heads at Met Gala

Princess Diana’s sole Met Gala appearance, a post-divorce triumph, remains iconic

Princess Diana attended only one Met Gala, in December 1996, just months after her divorce from then-Prince Charles. However, her appearance remains a legendary moment in Met Gala history.

The 1996 gala paid tribute to Christian Dior. Diana chose a navy-blue, lingerie-inspired slip dress designed by John Galliano, Dior’s newly appointed head designer. The dress, adorned with black lace and accompanied by a matching robe, was accessorized with sapphire earrings and a choker that complemented her engagement ring.

Galliano later revealed that he had encouraged Diana to choose pink, but she firmly declined. He also recounted a surprising detail: Diana had removed the dress’s corset without informing him. He described her as looking “liberated” and the altered dress as more “sensuous.”

Diana’s bold choice has been interpreted as a “revenge look,” reflecting her newfound freedom and confidence. Author Eloise Moran, in a past interview, described the princess as “happy and confident” and embracing her international stardom.

Despite her confidence, Diana reportedly had reservations about the dress, concerned about potentially embarrassing her 14-year-old son, Prince William. However, the gown became a fashion sensation and has even been displayed at the Victoria and Albert Museum. It’s undeniably one of the most memorable Met Gala looks of all time.
