CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — A Florida man alleged to have organized a million dollar retail fraud scheme in Charleston was sentenced to nine years in federal prison Monday, according to US District Attorney for the District of South Carolina Bryan P. Stirling’s office.
Daniel Cavey, 51, of Jacksonville Beach, Fl. was arrested by US Marshals in July 2024 after investigators discovered he and his conspirators, who were not named, were involved in an “extensive, multi-state” scheme to defraud a chain of home improvement stores, according to the District Attorney’s office.
Cavey and his associates were found to have gained access to corporate accounts at the home improvement stores and create fraudulent forms of ID for authorized users on those accounts. The perpetrators would then visit the stores, shop, and charge the purchases to the various corporate accounts, then sell the fraudulently obtained merchandise for a profit.
