Met Gala Pays Tribute to Fashion Icon André Leon Talley

The 2025 Met Gala saw numerous tributes to the late fashion journalist and trailblazer André Leon Talley, who passed away in January 2022. The gala’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” and dress code, “Tailored for You,” provided a fitting backdrop for the numerous homages.

Co-chair Colman Domingo, in particular, embodied Talley’s spirit. Domingo’s first look, a floor-length pleated blue cape with an embroidered bolero by Valentino, was reminiscent of Talley’s own flamboyant style.

He later changed into a black-and-white checkered jacket with a silk scarf tie and a striking floral lapel pin. Domingo explained his inspiration, citing Othello, royalty, and a nod to a photograph of Talley himself in a blue cape at a previous Met Gala.

Talley’s influence resonated throughout the event. Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, in a pre-gala op-ed, spoke of Talley’s unique understanding of fashion as a form of self-expression, especially for Black men. She highlighted his love for “mischief and fantasy” in his attire, noting that one of his suits would be on display at the accompanying exhibit.

Other attendees also paid tribute. Rapper Doechii sported a tennis-themed ensemble referencing Talley’s love of the sport, and model Paloma Elsesser wore a leather jacket emblazoned with Talley’s portrait.

In a video released by the Met Museum, Domingo reflected on the significance of the event and Talley’s legacy, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging those who paved the way for current artists and designers. He recognized Talley’s contribution to fashion and his impact on the Black male experience, stating, “It’s not just because I’m here, it’s because André Leon Talley was here.”
