KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Birds singing, the sound of bikes and people walking the trail are signs of life returning to Portage’s Celery Flats park one year after after a tornado flattened many of the area’s old-growth trees last year.
“It’s hard to believe how, in the matter of a few in minutes, a community can change,” Adam Herringa, the chief operating officer for the city of Portage, said.

He said 48,000 trees were destroyed when the tornado swept through the Portage area on May 7, 2024, with the Flats being the hardest hit. Recovery at the park is delicate work that demands careful consideration and balance.
“We are working with the forester. He’s out and about putting together plans about what a reforestation effort looks like here in Celery Flats,” Herringa said…
