Historic Katy rice dryer restoration faces setbacks amid break-ins

KATY, Texas — A local business owner is sounding the alarm after yet another break-in at a historic property he and his father are restoring. Over the weekend, a group of teens caused thousands of dollars in damage, but that’s not even the biggest concern. The real fear is that someone could get seriously hurt in the process.

Andrew Nurcahya and his father are remodeling the Cardiff Rice Dryer in Katy. It’s a labor of love, restoring Katy’s historic rice dryers with a dream to give something back to the community. They plan to build a museum, a gift shop and a restaurant. But since beginning this passion project a few years ago, break-ins have been a constant challenge.
