Judge ‘not ready’ to accept plea deal for teen in New Orleans killing of WA bagel shop owner

An Orleans Parish judge said Tuesday she was “not ready” to accept a plea deal for manslaughter in the case of a teenager accused of killing a Tacoma bagel shop owner in early 2024.

After a lengthy meeting with the lawyers, Criminal District Judge Camille Buras gave herself the rest of the week to consider the pending plea agreement, which calls for Malik Cornelius, 17, to serve a 26-year prison sentence.

Cornelius is accused of second-degree murder in the Jan. 5, 2024, killing of 32-year-old Jacob Carter. Police linked Cornelius to the crime through surveillance footage and ballistics, according to court records…
