Building collapse following hailstorm in Lorenzo, cause still unclear

LUBBOCK, Texas — Piles of ice in May made for an unusual sight in Lorenzo on Wednesday, a day after pea-sized hail pelted the town for nearly 30 minutes in a sudden storm that left residents and business owners surveying damage and cleaning up debris.

Among the most striking consequences of the storm was the collapse of a building near 5th Street and Harrison Avenue. The cause of the collapse remains unclear, and no official determination has been made. However, residents speculate about everything from the storm’s intensity to the age and condition of the structure.

Juan Bautista, who owns The Little Ranch Café just across the street, said he was shocked. “It looks like it exploded or something. I don’t know. It really came crashing down,” Bautista said.

After the storm subsided, Bautista said his priority was ensuring his building was still structurally sound. “Well, the first thing was to climb up on top of my building and make sure that I wasn’t collapsed up there,” he said. Luckily, his café sustained no damage…
